I did the same when flying to resosummit -- used the gig bag as a suitcase which
I checked, and carried on the reso in its hard case.  I was able to carry on 3
out of the 4 flights, but one was a regional commuter flight where I needed to
gatecheck, but then so did two other reso players and one guitar player, not to
mention half the people with roll-aboards.  Instrument was handled with care and
there was no damage to the case.

Of course, my hair was kind of damp during the earlier resosummit sessions.
