Two and a half years ago at one of those Bluegrass festival workshops I sat
in on a one hour "workshop" given by Rob Ickes. He explained in detail how
he and Tim Sheerhorn had made actual db measurements with his guitar.
Screens vs. rings only. He told us that there was measurable difference in
volume and a subjective difference in tone. That was good enough for me and
I immediately went back to my camper and carefully cut out the screens on my
RD-45. Noticeable jump in volume.
My next attack of "what if's" was replacing the stock fan cover plate with
a Tut Taylor Lyre pattern plate. Figuring that the Lyre / coffin holes
were larger than the fan. This time there was no increase in volume but
the guitar had a more "open" sound.
I haven't looked back. Just shake out the occasional Doritos - Nacho
crumbs, beer bottle cap, thumb pick that falls in there.
