Even back in the 1800's, telegraphers were afflicted with carpal tunnel
syndrome, known then as "telegraphers' glass arm." Many solved the problem by
using a telegraph key that was worked with a side-to-side motion rather than up
and down with the wrist.
Maybe changing the basic motion would help. You might try a flat pick ala Tut
Taylor as an alternate to all the thumb and finger work.
You might be able to switch styles occasionally to avoid using either method
for an extended period.
