Colin,

If you sand the top of the bridge sothe slots become
shallow, you might have some strings popping out of
the slots as you exert sideways pick pressure.

Better to find a fine small triangualr file and
sharpen the slots very slightly.  Usually a tired (or
mellower) sound comes from having the peaks of the
slot bottoms becoming rounded from string pressure. 
This will lower the string action imperceptably - as
long as you don't go wild - and return tone.

Removing wood from the top of the bridge would do
little for or to the sound, except as noted above.
