Hi Dan,...

I like to get into sixth-mode the "lazy-man's way": Just take your standard
d'Obreau, "GBD GBD" tuning, and crank your fourth string, "D", a full tone up to
"E".

"E" is the 6th element of the "G" scale. Now you're in "G6". That's your open
chord. "GBE GBD".

If you bar the fifth fret, voila! "C6"! Every fret is a, something "6th".

"G6" is also known as, "Em7";..."C6" is also, "Am7", etc., etc.,.."B6"=
"Abm7,..or"G#7",...and so on.

As for figuring out which strings are the first to the sixth, heaviest or
lightest,..it would be nice if we could all get into the habit of going:

   ): 6,5,4,3,2,1...

The " ):" is a typed bass-clef. or maybe just go ahead and type, "Bass to
treble, strings: 6,5,4,3,2,1,".

Hope that helps a bit. Because you're right, sometimes it can be confusing by
its vagueness.

Here's a tip: When you crank your fourth, ( your bass "D") up to the "E", on
reso, or LSG, you might want to go lighter guage on that string. For lap-steel
guitar, I find no problem usually. The string can usually take it. I just perch
an IMT-500 clip-on tuner on the headstock and crank up and down from open "G6" to
"G" all night long, as needed. And it's only ONE string that travels!Cheers!
