They allow the use of a one piece bridge as the adjusting screw for the cone is actually between the insert and the tailpiece. No palm rest! Takes a bit of getting used to. To answer your question regarding what tuning, I'd guess that ***most*** of the folks on this list, that play with a steel bar, are using either the G tuning, from 6 to 1 GBDGBD, or the D tuning, from 6 to 1 DAF#DAD. I'll bet you can play some decent "swing" tunes with that tuning you mentioned.....

Richie; most of the 6-string resophonic Steel players I encounter are playing
6-string instruments with 135135 G-tuning. The 6-string has been the standard for
at least 75 years. Until a few years ago almost everyone had to start with a
6-string Steel (unless they went electric) because all other configurations came
at substantially premium cost. So most everyone learned the 6-string and we
accepted and worked with its limitations. Then they stayed with it because that
is what they knew best.
A good reason that the 6-strings predominate is that most folks do not choose to
have to re-learn what they have cultivated their current skills with. For example
I can drive vehicles with automatic transmission but I prefer not to because my
skills and instincts are not optimized for automatic transmission. Heaven help me
(and the people around me) during a panic-stop if the automatic-equipped car has
a wide enough break-pedal that my clutch-foot can stomp on the break pedal at the
same time as my right-foot! I have never owned a vehicle with an automatic
transmission but I have made a point of developing an ability to drive them. For
the same reason that I make a point of driving an automatic transmission equipped
vehicle every so often I also still get out my 6-string Dobro with the G-tuning
every so often.
I should mention that I do change what my F-string is tuned to frequently (see
my web site for details about this).
--> (low to high): C F A C E G A C E G.
I have a detail-picture and discuss the 1-piece saddle on my web site.
Regarding playing "some decent "swing" tunes" with this tuning... well I try to
play everything well. But I am no Sally Van Meter, Mike Auldridge, Lewis London,
or Julian Tharpe. The tune that has been going through my head recently which I
want to arrange for Dobro is "Sentimental Journey." Can I "swing" this
arrangement... time will tell.
