Ralph,
Buck's "hero" in the 30's was Cliff Carlyle, a maverick Dobro picker who
was greatly influenced by the Blues artists of the day. Buck picked up on
this at an early age and used Blues licks to a great degree in his playing.
When he met up with Earl in the 40's he was fascinated by the 3 finger roll
that Earl was developing at this time. He combined the two techniques and
the rest is history. In 1948, when Buck started playing Dobro in his unique
way with Lester and Earl, he really started to bring the instrument back
from total obscurity and made it the immensely popular "Reso" that we know
today. Buck Graves is universally recognized as the musician who saved the
Dobro from extinction.
Happy Dobroing,
Pete
