If I may offer an observation. From my Banjo experience with everything
else being equal Mahogany will be have the "warmer" tone of say maple,
walnut, birch or spruce. Mahogany doesn't offer much in the aesthetics
department as it doesn't have much figure to it. Therefore I suspect the
cheaper prices for mahogany instruments. Maple will give the brighter -
harsher tone and walnut somewhere in between.
