I'll try this one. "Half diminished" is also called a "minor 7 flat 5"
chord. Its notes include the root (1), flat 3, flat 5 and flat 7. E.g.,
for a C chord: C, Eb, Gb, Bb.
It's called a "half dimished" because its 7 note is flatted or lowered one
half step. A diminished chord has the 7 note flatted "twice" or lowered a
full step. You could envision a diminshed chord as 1, flat 3, flat 5, 6.
