They're great. I have one on one of my 6-string Nationals and one on my 8-string
National Model D.
A couple of years ago, Jerry Douglas was using one so he didn't have to tour
with two resos, and would switch from G to D tuning. To me, that would be an
awful floppy bottom string in D, but it seemed to work well for him.
I use mine for D tuning and alter mostly tuning by lowering the strings, partly
so that when I take it out of the case it is in D tuning. I sometimes use it for
D minor tuning, along with F#6th (lower a root or two or three), or lower the
low A string to G in order to have an open IV chord bass note or for playing in
Gmi.
I spoke to Dave Borisoff recently, and he is redesigning the Hipshot
specifically for the increased string tension that a resonator guitar has
compared to most electric guitars. As I understand it, there will then be two
versions, one for electric instruments and one for reso.
