Hi Leon and List,

Paul Beard has a video, probably a dvd by now, on setting up resophonic guitars
that covers everything I previously mentioned. Paul takes you thru the set up
process step by step, and his video is where I got most of my information from.
Check Paul out at RESOPHONIC OUTFITTERS. Paul Beard has probably forgotten more
about resophonic guitars than most of us will ever learn! His set up video is
well worth whatever they're charging for it!

I'm sorry I can't help you regarding Liberty guitars, (but I'll bet someone on
this list can?) I don't know anything about them. Also I don't know if
Quarterman ever shipped with that small spring you mentioned. There's a test
shown in Paul's set up video, where he takes a Q cone, and compares it to a
lesser quality cone, by suspending both cones by that screw, and gently tapping
them on the edge with a pencil....kinda like you'd tap a cymbal.....and the
difference is dramatic! The lesser cone kinda goes clunk, while the Q cone
really "sings" by comparison. The best spiders have the number "14" stamped on
them. Something to do with the foundry that cast the original spiders for the
original Dopyera brothers guitars. You can also sometimes tell the better
spiders from a group by hanging them from a hook, even a screwdriver and again
gently tapping them with a pencil. The better ones will "ring" like the cones
do. Paul Beard's components, available from Resophonic Outfitters
, are possibly the best available today if you are thinking of upgrading any
reso-guitar yourself. I'D STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT SET UP VIDEO THO......can't
stress that enough.

Then there's also the nut. A bone nut seems to be preferred by most, but I got
a few brass nuts awhile back, and I tried one on a "play in the rain" guitar I
picked up, I think someone built this thing from a kit, but this brass nut,
really helped the guitar a lot.

Then there's the "action" of the guitar. I've seen some "offshore" guitars, in
the $200 to $300 price range, that while they were sq. neck guitars, the action
was so low, you'd buzz along the frets with your slide if you put any pressure at
all on them. Not good!

So there's a lot to properly setting these things up. I've been fooling with
reso-guitars for just over 10 years now, and I don't claim to be expert, far from
it!!! With a lot of help from this list, which for me is ***the*** main source
of information regarding these things, I've finally gotten to the point where I
can (sometimes) spot and correct troubles like those I mentioned. Rattles, etc.

There are sooooo many little "tricks". For awhile, after I replace bridge
inserts for instance, when I change strings, and I always use the same brand and
guage of strings, I "burnish" or polish the string slots by rubbing the new
string back and forth a dozen or so times, to hopefully cause an EXACT fit,
between the string and it's slot in the saddle. An idea I got from this list,
(thanks to whoever) but it seems to help. When everything is about as close to
where I think it should be, a couple of times I've put just a tiny drop of "crazy
glue" in the bridge slots, then let it dry overnight, and this seems to make the
inserts last longer.

Apologies to those on the list who've probably read these suggestions and
thoughts over and over, but hey, y'all been TOO QUIET anyways......O;-)

Leon, if you're guitar doesn't sound it's best, it's discouraging to play and
improve your playing skills, so while "your mileage may vary," I'd encourage you
to get a copy of that set up video from Resophonic Outfitters, *** OR*** have
someone who really knows how to set reso-guitars up (and I don't think your local
music store is going to be of much help) do the work for you.

Happy "twangin,"

Richie
