That's Greg Booth from Alaska, playing his Maple Wechter-Scheerhorn Elite. And
it's in standatd G tuning. GBDGBD. He's an accomplished pedal steeler who only
took up reso 2 or 3 years ago. Yikes! He gets that D6 sound by playing the 7th
fret barred but with the 2 high strings open (giving you D-F#-A-D-B-D). His
youtube videos also include a beautiful version of "The Christmas Song" where he
drops the low G down to E. Scrumptious.
Cindy Cashdollar plays a G6 tuned reso for her version of P-Rag in her video
"Variations" course.
My guess on the Ross Nickerson version is that it's in standard G tuning.
It's Rob Ickes playing, and he can make G tuning sound like pretty near anything.
Yeah.

Take a look at this on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0lAcSKJjqQ
I'd guess this player's using G6, spelled (low to high) GBEGBD.
Sounds like the little I can hear on the 30-second clip of the Nickerson
song on iTunes.
