You can feed audio into that 1/8" input jack, but it won't be the best
quality. Depending on the computer's sound card results can be adequate
or maybe not. We usually use an interface that gets into the computer
via the USB or Firewire connections (direct to the bus as a digital signal)
There is always a lot of discussion in audio circles about the quality
of analog to digital (A to D) and D to A. There is a wide quality
variaition (and the price ranges from the sound card thrown in with your
computer to sophisticated professional converters than can run into the
$thousands.
But, getting back to the original issue, yes you can. If (as some sound
cards do) yours has a line input jack and a mic input jack use the line.
It's a Tip Ring Sleeve jack --(TRS) tip is left, ring is right and
sleeve is the common ground for both, cables that have an 1/8" stereo
plug on one end and RCA right and left connectors (usually red=right
white=left) and you can take a line level output from a stereo or sound
system. (If your computer has only mic level input, you can get a cable
with a built in attenuator to drop the line level down to mike level).
