More thoughts:
There are now several makers who sell condenser mikes that plug directly
into the USB port for their power (so they don't need 48V phantom). If
you don't already have a condenser mike that 's an option. Street price
often under $100.
The better solution (particularly if you already have some mikes) is a
USB interface. Essentially, it's an external sound card (gets rid of the
internal noise generation problem with computers) with better
components. Most have phantom power for condenser mikes, usually two
inputs (most are either mike or instrument) and they also provide better
quality sound output (again since they have better digital to analog
converters) Street price usually around $125 but they sometimes show up
on Ebay at lower prices.
