Randy,
You can play any notes (and some other too) from the A major scale. You just
have to stop on one of the 3 notes that make up the chord you're playing over
when you rest. Any progression that's Diatonic that is.
1-2m-3m-4-5-6m-7dim.
This takes practice to know how to move through the scale, have it make musical
sense, and then like Musical chairs, grap a cool chord tone (or chair) when the
music stops.
That's a great concept to get your mind wrapped around and then tackle the
exceptions
