Hey, Charlie, Dave Dillon said:
You always need an active pickup, the difference is if the preamp is
built in to the guitar or not. A good preamp translates whatever the
pickup's impedance is and buffers it for the amp or mixing board. The
advantage of an active pickup, in theory at least, is that all the
pickup/preamp components are matched for the best response. Using a
passive piezo pickup into an amp without a preamp (internal or
external)
is the worst since the impedance mis-match is very great.
I don't disagree with what he said, and I did leave out the fact that I always
use at bare minimum a good quality direct injection box between the instruments
with the K & K pickups in them and the amp/board.
I believe that you would find the concensus to be that active pickups for
acoustic instruments are far superior to passive in almost all cases whether or
not your controls are on board. The debate still rages hot with respect to
electric instruments. I would just accent two points that I made to help you in
your search--you have control with active that you don't have with passive, and
you should very carefully choose the active pickup that you will install, as the
various systems will sound somewhat different, and they will color the tone of
your instrument some, some more than others, and some favorably while others
perhaps not. Don't expect your sound coming out of the speakers from your pickup
to sound exactly like your instrument going through a good microphone.
As for volume control, if you don't want to put a knob on the instrument would
an in-line volume pedal work?

Wow, thanks both you guys for the detailed info. You've got me talked into
the active.
But, whether I get the active or passive, I still need to have one of the
little preamp boxes if I want to have a volume control, right?
