Matt; "Play it like a horn": Very cool! I tend to think in terms of playing
rich chords most of the time instead playing-on or around the melody. So you and
I approach our playing from different perspectives.
If I understand you correctly, you are using a 6-string tuned DGDGBD or in the
GBDGBD "bluegrass" tuning. Those are both (for me) tough tunings to play many
swing tunes in, I applaud your patience with these tunings. I find tunings
without a 6 in them to be too challenging for me to want to deal with. Having the
6 in (or adding it to) the tuning means that I have both the I chord and the vi
chord right there from the get-go. Yes we just bend the D-strings to get the vi
chord in G-major tuning but the b7 without a slant too is just too much for me
(so far) to do elegantly. I know that I need to be more proficient at adding
slants to my string bends.
If you are using the bluegrass tuning and are willing to re-tune 1 string and
use the G6 tuning then the minor chords and the C7b9 chord will be easy to play.
The tuning would be either GBDGBE or GBEGBD. In this case the C7b9 would be at
fret 5 with a G-string and an E-string bent a half step sharp with the pinky and
ring finger.
I understand that changing tunings challenges you just as much as I feel
challenged when I do not have at least a 6 in my open tuning. We are different
minds following different paths on a similar journey. It is these illuminating
moments that keep me re-visiting this List as the time passes.
