I think I missed some of this thread due to a computer crash and a
subsequent purchase of a laptop with Vista Service Pack 1. I was
disappointed to find that SP1 wasn't a reinstall of XP.

I haven't seen that at all. Nationals were about the only good metal picks
you could get in '61 when I started playing banjo, and they were pretty much
the industry standard for years and years. The idea of a fingerpick giving
way to your attack on the string just doesn't make any sense to me. Over the
years, I've only known one banjo player, Larry McNeely, that uses an .018.
Some, like Herb Pedersen, still use old Nationals.

I wonder what effect the thinner metal has on the initial attack of the
