I have found that with the exception of picks that set far back towards the
knuckle (Acri, Shelor, others?), it's hard to avoid these cuticle problems.
Even when I played with Shelors these issues were at best minimized.

For me the best way to deal with this is not to bite the nails - instead use
clippers to remove any excess dead skin. When I notice a problem starting
up, I give the nail a good squirt of neosporin and cover it with a bandaid
before bedtime. Air it out the next day, and I'm usually good to go.
