The story I heard regarding Tut's "unique" method of holding the bar, was there
was no one to show him the correct way, when he started learning to play. The
same goes for his use of a flat pick, rather than the thumb and two finger picks
the rest of us use. It sure works for Tut!!!
Back in the very early days of non-pedal steel guitar, there was another fellow,
Bobby Koeffer, who holds the bar, about the same way Tut does. There's a video
of Bobby Koeffer on You Tube, playing with Cindy Cashdollar and another steel
player who's name escapes me, but you can see Bobby's method of holding the bar,
almost looks like the bar is between the thumb and a clenched fist.
Maybe it had something to do with playing those "knife & gun" clubs???
Ducking for cover,
Richie
