I'm just a beginner on the reso, but have played guitar for 25 years. I once
had serious problems with wrist pain - carpal tunnel syndrome. After
consulting a couple doctors and a classical guitar teacher, I started these
two practices, which eliminated the problem for me:
1 - Use correct hand position, i.e. keep your wrists fairly straight,
minimizing any bend in the wrist.
2 - Do warmup exercises before and after every gig or lengthy practice
session, gently flexing the wrists in both directions (also shoulders and
elbows).
Hope this is helpful!

PS - Thanks to everyone for the advice about fingerpicks! I was using cheap
generic picks, and having problems. Simply buying some better picks (at a
specialty guitar store) made all the difference in the world!
