I'm late with this post....
I'm pretty enamored any time I see a resonator guitar in "unusual"
settings. Therefore it is with great joy that I reflect on the "Afro
Semitic Experience" concert that my wife and I attended several weeks ago.
The "Experience" is a band whose repertoire is largely built around
jazz, African folk melodies, Jewish liturgical music and jazz standards.
It's all played around blues, bee bop, swing and other musical forms.
I guess before I go any further I should identify the great Stacy
Phillips as the resonator guitarist in this ensemble which also features
piano (where the sound board is occasionally played), woodwinds,
acoustic bass, two drummers (a kit and congas/traditional percussion)
and Stacy on reso guitar, lapsteel and fiddle.
This my friends is a big band. They played to a packed house in the
heart of Washington DC and just had us in the palms of their hands.
Once again Stacy just destroyed any of the "traditional" boundaries that
some might claim for the resonator guitar. He has simply invented new
techniques and manages to wear (for instance) bee bop like an old
comfortable shoe.
I'd love to get inside Stacy's head one day...
We loved it..
I don't think the band has a website. I did find plenty of their music
on their fine MySpace site at http://tinyurl.com/4y2o4h
Thanks Stacy.
