Hey, all--I have this little raffle going on and want to let you all in on it.
If you want to get in on this the deadline is going to be midnight PDT Friday,
July 18. Go here for photos of the shadowbox:

See below for some descriptions of the work and the raffle details in italics:
I am constructing a shadow box that will display a thumbpick and two fingerpicks
that belonged to Josh Graves. The box itself will be composed of millwork scraps
that are falloff from window trims that were on Josh and Evelyn's house. I will
auction the shadowbox with 100% of the proceeds going to Evelyn Graves. I'll be
back periodically to flesh out the particulars of the raffle and to update
everyone as to my progress on the project. I have as yet only studied the raw
materials that I will use and considered possible designs. I'll be starting the
work right away and suppose at this time that Jerry Douglas himself will select
the winner in a random drawing at the Grey Fox festival this year on July 19.
My email address is suoirafenrm at yahoo dot com. Remove the spaces and use the
symbols instead of the word
This is a raffle. The prize is a display box which is under construction by
meself which will contain a thumbpick and two fingerpicks that were owned by Josh
Graves. The box will be constructed of materials that were falloff from work that
was done on the wheelchair adaptation remodeling that was done by Bob Kordas some
years ago on the Grave's house, and some stuff that I have laying around my house
to round out the materials. I'll release details on the construction periodically
to keep kicking this thread up to easy visibility on the board and keep interest
in the project keen.
Price for a "ticket" I will set at five dollars apiece. Each five dollars a
person pledges will buy you one "ticket" in "the hat." We will be using the honor
system for counting ticket purchases. Use the email address that I posted on the
first item on this thread and notify me of your pledge amount. I will keep a
tally and send you Evelyn's address and you mail her a check for the amount of
your pledge.
All participants in the Ramp Removal drive will be entered for the amount of
their pledges in that effort, and will be eligible to fortify their pledge by
buying more tickets in this raffle. I will announce the winner after returning
from the Grey Fox festival on July 21 and contact them for a mailing address.
Be sure and put the word "Raffle" in the subject line on your check so that
Evelyn knows what it is for.
Tell your friends, bake sale, lemonade stand, etc..
One thing that I might add to the tease is an inclusion of some details about
the picks so that we don't surprise or disappoint some true dobro-philes.
The fingerpicks are a mis-matched set. I can't say that I know whether or not
Josh purposefully matched or mis-matched his fingerpicks. If he did mis-match
them for easy identification it would hardly be an anomally. There are plenty of
us playing today that do purposefully mis-match our fingerpicks. The fingerpicks
are shaped quite differently from each other at the tip, and I slipped them on
hoping for a little DNA transfer, and noted that the wraps were different
diameters, unmistakably for different fingers.
Also, some people might know that Josh usually used a white thumbpick. This is
not a white thumbpick; it is a dark color with darker flecks in it, and though it
is shaped a lot like the Dunlop standard thumbpick I couldn't see any stamp on
the pick identifying the maker.
I could only speculate and might not be able to determine without
equivocation--this might be non-standard gear for Josh, or maybe really old
gear--who knows? I can only say for sure that upon request Evelyn will provide a
letter certifying the authenticity of the picks.
I showed this gear to Jerry Douglas when he was in Portland in May and he right
away pointed out the scoring on the inside of the thumbpick and told me that was
the first thing that Josh would do when he got a new thumbpick was straight-away
haul out his penknife and score a hatching pattern into the surface of the inside
of the thumbpick. He also mentioned that Earl Scruggs did this too.
Another item now included with the shadowbox is a copy of a VHS video produced
by Clarence Jackson of he and Josh pickin in Josh's living room. It's # 1 in a
series of 3.
This one is signed by Josh, Evelyn donated it to be part of the raffle just last
week.
If you want in on this don't wait. I'll be leaving for New York tomorrow
morning and I will check in by long-distance for emails pledging support for this
raffle.
Good luck everyone.
