Wow, this really saddens me. I first met Matt around 1998, I think, when I
saw Matt play with Amy Gallatin at Strawberry Park. In the spring of 2000,
when Matt had turned to accordion, Amy was looking for someone to fill in,
and I think Eric Levenson suggested me. It was sort of a mixed up time: the
great Roger Williams was sometimes playing with Amy but couldn't make all of
her gigs. I was working an intense day job, but I took most weekends for a
few months to play with Amy, Kevin, and either Eric or John on bass. So I
learned Matt's parts, and Matt's vocal harmonies. For a long while I felt
like I was playing the role of Matt, and I heard more of Matt's playing than
anyone else that summer as I drove from Boston to Connecticut and back.
