I had my own wake up call a few years ago. After wearing ear plugs
for years when playing electric guitar, when I started playing
acoustic instruments I assumed I didn't need to worry. Just
practicing banjo was enough that I totally flunked a hearing test at
my yearly physical -- I was unable to hear any frequency at any level.
Fortunately it was temporary, this time--a month later I tested normal
at an audiologist. So let me echo Howard's warning. People vary
widely in their susceptibility to hearing damage, and even sticking to
the EPA guidelines (as I did) is not necessarily enough.
For those who don't want to spend the money for custom molds, I've had
