Hi Roy, and welcome to the list!
Square neck reso guitars have the added size of that square neck, so I've never
seen one with an actual truss rod, however, I've seen many guitars that have been
built with a three piece neck, laminated, that would provide added strength. I'm
told my "Blackie" DeNeve has a carbon fibre piece fitted and glued into the neck
under it's fretboard.
When you figure reso-guitars use heavier strings to begin with, and then if you
play one standing up, you are actually hooking a strap to either end, and then
pushing down in the center of the guitar as you play it......owch.......you can
see where some added strength would be desirable.
Maybe Dick DeNeve could comment on this? I'm a big fan of DeNeve's guitars so
your mileage may vary, but I tell folks "Blackie" is so strong, you could use her
to prop up a porch!
What does Beard say about the neck in the instructions of the kit. Paul Beard
has forgotten more about reso guitars than most of us will even know, so I'd
certainly consider the directions, if I was brave enough to build a kit!
Keep us posted as to your progress, and remember, the only "dumb question" is
the one that doesn't get asked!
Richie
