Hi William,
I have to disagree the Thatcher destroyed manufacturing. Manufacturing was
in a mess due to outmoded techniques, restrictive practices by unions etc.
and the structural decline would have continued without the changes that
were brought in alongside any fiscal issues. You might find that more
manufacturing jobs have been lost since 1997 when Blair came to power. Blair
has replaced them with the "salaried unemployed". This creates resentment in
others who pay taxes to fund this inefficiency and that anger is not
puritan!
You are correct about politics and economics - one glance at China today
will show you a free market economy and one party state. Wily old Deng
XiaoPing knew this, for he was not blinded to the Chinese spirit by what was
basically Western political dogma of collectivism.
What is occurring today in the West and in Blair's world particularly as far
as I can see is a creeping 'outsourced Statism', where the government
privatises but retains sway over what and who does, creating the seeds for
immense corruption, influence peddling, lobbying etc. Very bad for the
individual. If people took more personal responsibility and distributed
their own largesse in terms of charity or donations, much of the State would
disappear and the actions would be more democratic. You can avoid buying
Bill Gates' hopeless software if you dislike the odious megalomaniac but you
cannot avoid taxes from government. Thus you can avoid handing money and
thus influence over to a commercial organisation you dislike in the private
sphere but that choice is not available to you if the State us up to its
tricks and handing over your cash.
BTW I think you will find that someone who is in the 'leisure class' (as in
State-managed leisure class) would have little or no 'face' in Chinese
society. I would not wish it on anyone.
Tim
