Howdy Joe,
You are quite right of course what Savage did wasnt S.C. and I never intended
to suggest it was which is why I specified what he campaigned on and he didnt
say they were going to do what S.C. ( Douglas) advocated but the Labour movement
was inspired by Douglas regards the sovereign perogative of using one reserve
bank to spend their way ( do you know of any way to progress without spending?)
out of or into what-ever. The mainpoint I wanted to make was that he did do what
he said, immediately, not just talk at campaign time, however specifically in
terms of the words you used my answer wasnt entirely appropriate outside
defending the man from undue criticism not of his making.
The choice was either the Keynes way of increasing foreign debt to do so or not
borrow but create your own. The difference in NZs case may be largely no
interest and no foreign currency required to repay the principle if it was
required to be repaid. Some have tried to ascertain the exact details of the
money created without satisfaction.
The nationalisation of banking ( reserve banks, the B of E)was to become
acceptable in due course anyway.
I am not aware of any political entity adopting Douglas proposals.
Your closing point is of course also absolutely true.
Peter H
