(Keith Wilde wrote:-) Regardless of
whatever else it does that may be bad, Wal-Mart does seem undeniably effective
at reducing prices to consumers. What do specialists in Douglas' idea of
the retail discount have to say about the Wal-Mart phenomenon as either
expressing the policy Douglas advocated or as limiting the force of its
applicability?
(Joe replies:-) In spite of any benefits to
consumers by extending their purchasing power through lower prices, I think
Douglas would be aghast at just about everything involving the operations
of 'Wal-Mart' were he alive today Personally, I think the only
thing that can be said 'for' them is that they do prove that
'credit' can definitely be used to lower prices. Although why 'Wal-Mart'
uses it that way is hardly for the same objective Douglas had in mind with the
CPD.
