Howdy Chick,
If you expect a rational and reasonable coversation then you have to be rational
and reasonable. The question is, also, can you have such a convesation with
others around you as you hypertheticaly put it with Jim.
Your whole focus in your arguments has been to mis-represent the Christian faith
and reduce the Lord Jesus Christ down to just another spiritual leader as
inspired other religions. All because you cant see any difference and dont
believe that anyone can know the truth about God and so Jesus and the Bible are
also-rans and therefore you expect me and Jim to forego our own beliefs to fit
yours and because we have objected you then accuse us of being superior and
arrogant and that we are not able to hold a conversation with others.
Did we ever expect you to conform to ours or review your beliefs to the point of
offending you, rather we simply defended our beliefs. You have taken no notice
of the fact that we object to your expectations of us. You are completely
oblivious of the fact that when you try to make people conform to your views and
mis-represent theirs in order to do so that they might be offended.
You havent quoted any orthoritative work that represents your beliefs ( which
appears to be 'deist'). You waded into the religion that has the most emphatic
belief about God entering history and reveilling the nature and mind of God when
it is totally against your beliefs and thus making you the least able to handle
it, forget trying to interpret it. You have been both unreasonable and
non-rational. You might be reasonable and rational in discussing how you see
things regards your beliefs but in the area that is completely foreign you are
not, you doggedly hang on and then get personal which is the universally
recognised sign that one has lost face on the issues.
It is not arrogant to defend ones beliefs. To expect Christians to share their
treasures like S.C. but hide its Christian origins is a gross insult in any mans
language. I bet you have never expected the like of any other religion.
The Bible is a library of books written by many authors over thousands of years
with a single theme through out and the prophecies alone make it unique and
evident of divine origin without going into other features all of which dont
exist in the other canonised books. There is no common signature through the
canonsied books of the world as evidence that they are all of divine inspiration.
Likewise the life of Jesus is just as unique. Even the Jews that despised him had
to acknowledge that God had to be with him to do what he did. I challenged you,
in effect, previously as to prophecies fulfilled and miracles ( forget
resurrection) by any other religious leader and you ignored it. Ignoring major
differences is no rational grounds for advancing the need you seem to have for
leveling everything and everyone to one equal level. Your disposition then means
that any spirtual being can be equated with 'god', whether the Creator or a
fallen angelic being like lucifer that he created whom has a long record of
counterfeiting everything that God does, to deceive.
The New Testament is loaded with the believers knowledge of God personally.
Although the God of Israel had a revealed relationship with Israel involving the
supernatural that caused the nations around them to fear them and their God, the
Book of Psalms clearly demonstrates the personal knowledge and experience with
God as fulfilled in the New Testament and also in the life of Abraham and Sarah
and others.
If you want to hold a rational and reasonable conversation with others that
believe something totally different from you then you might bare the following in
mind:
1. If you want respect for your views first show it towards the others belief.
2. Listen to what they say, realise the areas of difference (and be able to
accept difference) from those that might be similar rather than presume to
re-interpret their beliefs for them to converge them into your own.
3. If you cant win your argument dont get personal and accuse others of being
superior because you couldnt be so.
4. Be prepared to agree to differ when there is no common ground.
Jims sign-off 'take care' is very respectful.
