Subject:[socialcredit] the computer's in charge
Date:Tuesday, September 6, 2005  12:26:11 (EDT)
From:Triumphofthepast <Triumphofthepast @...com>

Yesterday I tried to buy my wife a carton of Carlton 100s at Kroger.  They had only 120s and Menthol.  I reminded them I have been asking them to get these for months.  The manager-on-duty said they had been sending item requests to their superiors but that these have been ignored.  I asked how everything else in the store gets ordered.  He said they more or less order themselves when scanned.  I said, "So the problem is to get the first carton."  He said yes.  They place item requests by e-mail.  I suggested he step up to pressure by making phone calls.

I went to Walgreens to buy a carton of Carlton 100s.  They didn't have a carton, but they had 10 packs.  I said, "I'll take the 10 packs."  As the girl was putting them on the counter, I said, "You're going to charge me the price of a carton, right?"  She said no, they would have to charge the price of one pack times 10.  I called the manager.  He said the same.  I suggested if he could ascertain the price, he could just type it in.  He had no way of ascertaining the price of the goods he sells in his store!  I suggested he make a guess.  He say, oh no, that might have all sorts of "legal ramifications."  I gave up.

I went to CVS and succeeded in buying a carton of Carlton 100s.  I took the carton back to Kroger and asked the manager if he could do anything with the carton.  He said yes, so I gave him the carton and kept the cigarettes.

My wife buys barber supplies from a distributor called Maly's.  Sometimes they deliver from a warehouse somewhere, sometimes I buy in person at a store.  I had a tube of the wrong after-shave and no receipt and no way to tell whether it was delivered or from the store.  Probably it was a misdelivery, but I know from experience that getting the delivery person to come out to do a return is next to impossible.  We have been a customer in good standing for years, so today I took it to the store, not asking for cash back but only to make an exchange.  The manager on duty said no returns without receipt, but if he could find any receipt with the same item, he could do it.  He looked back through 2004 and didn't find it.  I suggested going back further.  He said the computer wouldn't let him.  The item I was returning cost $4.98.  The item I wanted to exchange it for cost $4.99.  I said, "How bad would it be if I just put this on the shelf and took the other one and went out the door?"  Apparently very bad.  I was forced to give up.

If only managers were allowed to manage!

Michael
