Hughes in his book quotes Ruskin's description of Capitalism (Unto This Last, pp
101,102)
"It is a root , which does not enter into vital function until it produces ...
fruit ... but capital which produces nothing but capital is only root producing
root, bulb issuing in bulb, never in tulip; ... The Political Economy of Europe
has hitherto devoted itself wholly to the multiplication ... of bulbs. It never
saw nor conceived, such a thing as a tulip."
Or, as Lewis Carroll described it to Alice, "Jam yesterday, and jam tomorrow,
but never jam today!"
Shades (or perhaps foreshadowing) of the A+B theorem.

"I live near to Lancaster University, where Ruskins library is housed. The
librarians and custodians there too claim not to have heard of Ruskins monetary
interest, and they do not even recall the content of 'Fors Claviger' or 'Unto
this
last'." (Ken)
Ken: I am a particular fan of Ruskin and would love to correspond about him
either on or off list. Have a look at my essay, "Berkeley and Ruskin" at www.alor.org under "Triumph of the Past" and "Michael Lane's
Library."
