Hi John.
Mmm. "War without hate". That I think is a bit of whimsey, though I wonder
if you have read C.S.Lewis`s "Screwtape Letters" ?
There is a lovely bit of dialogue between a Major and a Minor Devil. The
Minor one is boasting that he has got a war going. The major Devil tells
him off, "Do you not realise that all the BEST side of mankind comes out
in a war as well as the killing ?"
One of the famous letters surviving from the English Civil War, my own
period of historical study, speaks of " A war without an enemy " too.
You write of Rommel visiting NZ. I actually come from the one part of the
British Isles occupied by the Germans in WW2. Its why I was evacuated to
the mainland. It is my view that the occupation was really a bit of
propaganda, there was no real advantage in territorial terms, in modern
times for the Germans to commit so much resource in holding them other
that Hitlers approach to Churchill seeking co-operation to fight the
Russians. His line was "Look, we have the Channel Islands. We are treating
them well. come and join us properly ."
When all the emotion is put aside, other than the unjust domination, that
was actually the truth. The occupying force were mature men, under very
strict discipline. Transgressions, when they occurred, were heavily
punished.
The atrocities were confined to one of the cleared smaller islands, out of
sight until later, and to East European Slave labourers.
The point being that in fact the German Commanders WERE welcomed back on
the islands after the war. Much was made of their ALL being victims of
extreme political dogma.
I sometimes wonder if these occupiers knew, or understood the debt free
status of the islands ?
Ken.

And
>maybe
you
>have
>something to add. As I
understand it NZ once had
>a
>central bank

Like the Aussi
>Commonwealth
Bank.
>And
>that this bank provided
