Hi William.
It is not a matter of correction. Your point about "Protest votes" is one
that is often used, for various reasons, and absolutely impossible to
prove one way or another :-)
A situation made much worse by a non proportional voting system.
As for Gaitskill. I am sure you will remember that he was one of the LSE
(London school of economics) gang, primed and let loose on the idea that
A+B HAD to be destroyed. His was one of those books published in the years
after the word went out. And before the great silence.
And as with all the others ignoring the time factor :-(
Ken.

HI Joe and Ken
I believe a great deal of that vote was a
personal
one against Hugh Gaitskill for his poor showing as leader of the Labour
party and was in effect a "Protest vote" among Labour ranks who were
determined not to vote for the conservative candidate. I personally had a
great deal of time for Gaitskill, who I feel was much let down by
circumstances that favoured the conservative party at all the elections
he
led them. I could be wrong however and will willingly accept correction on
that point.
BIll McGunnigle
