HI Keith
AS a cynical aside I must point out that some of the hamburger meat imported
to the USA from Australia has been found to contain the DNA of the Great Red
Kangaroo. This partially explains why Australian hamburger meat is cheaper
than US hamburger meat. Kangaroo meat is free but Beef has to be paid for. I
am sure this would not be a consideration when they were assessing the
relative merits of the various hamburger supplies of meat. Apparently the
mixed meat gave a better and more "gamey" taste than pure beef patties, and
this is why he practice was allowed to continue. There is no problem from a
disease aspect because Kangaroos are unaffected by most of the pathogens
that attack humans.
