Subject:[youthgas] Drug use, stress and young people
Date:Friday, August 4, 2006  13:54:04 (+0930)
From:jmwalsh <jmwalsh @...........au>

Hi there once again,

I think it was Priya who was enquiring about research that is available on the topic of young people, stress and drug & alcohol use/misuse.

There is also a recent study out of Uni of Melbourne that found young people use cannabis to self-medicate their mental health illness.  Some of the young people reported that their cannabis use makes them feel better – less depressed and anxious.  The research found that many young people who use cannabis and developed a mental health condition, continue to use cannabis to help cope with the condition.

One of the researches, Leanne Hides was interviewed this week on ABC radio– here’s the link http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2006/s1704346.htm

Keeping in mind that generally drug use serves some purpose or provides some sort of reward to the person using, then it makes sense that there are some young people using/misusing drugs to cope with stress (the purpose it’s serving is to alleviate stress symptoms).

Cheers

Jo
