I would like to clarify some points regarding a comment that
was made in relation to Reach “I
have heard criticism of Reach (based in Melbourne)
because of the whirlwind approach to coming in and hyping kids up without
empowering them with skills to change their situations.”
Every year, Reach works with over 40,000 young people across Australia,
creating an encouraging, supportive and stimulating environment, where they
often discover they can do anything they set their minds to.
Often the biggest barrier between a teenager and their goals
is a lack of self-belief and support. They need somewhere to connect with
others, to be heard, to have fun and believe in themselves.
Reach provides workshops, weekends away and large-scale events
that help young people to connect with each other, run by our specially trained
crew of inspirational, highly skilled young leaders (who are supported by a
professional team of social workers and psychologists).
Our integrated programs, from our school workshops covering various
themes to our full day workshops (Heroes Days) serve as an introduction to a 5
week series run each school term in different localities across Melbourne, as
well as weekends away in school holidays. We also carry out extensive teacher
training as part of a strategy for sustaining the work that is introduced by
our workshops and full day programs. All of which are currently in very
high-demand.
Feedback is important to us; we evaluate
our programs on an ongoing basis and young people, parents and teachers often
describe their Reach experience as inspirational, positive and empowering.
I hope this more clearly demonstrates the work of Reach is far
beyond “a whirlwind approach to hyping kids”.

presentations
Hi
Priya,
I
run my own private Life Coaching practice in Melbourne. I have found from my limited
experience with schools and my discussions with people in the youth area that
'once off' talks usually have limited affect unless they are supported by the
schools curriculm.
If
you are looking at promoting behavioural change and/or a mind shift, try and
work it in with what they have been focusing on at school. Students will absorb
the information better if they see the relevance to their school studies and
also to their life (the former statement comes from the Victorian Essential
Learning Standards - 'adolescents are more likely to judge learning activities
and experiences in terms of where they may lead, and respond positively with a
curriculum that links with, and has meaning to their lives outside as well as
in school - p. 4 http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/downloads/vels_standards/velsrevlvl6.pdf)
I
have heard criticism of Reach (based in Melbourne)
because of the whirlwind approach to coming in and hyping kids up without
empowering them with skills to change their situations.
I
will be presenting research on issues that affect young people at The Annual
Australian and New Zealand Adolescent Health Conference in Sydney
from the 13th to 15th November 2006 and the Involve 2006 Conference in New Zealand from
1st to the 3rd November. I don't know many people in this sector so if you
are going send me an e-mail so we can have a chat when we are there :)
