Hi all,
This is in response to the quiery as to what can be done in regional
areas regarding youth transport. As a former youth from the Byron Shire that
befited from the Bat bus's operation, I'm writing to suggest that it has in
this region been only one part of a solution to the areas' transporation
problems that are yet to be solved like in most regional areas in Australia.
It is true that the bat bus has provided transport to events for youth for
some time now but it only operates if hired in advance and it is still at a
higher cost to young people than public transport options esp. in cities. As
to day to day transport around the shire, the bat bus is not consistent or
well advertised to this end, necessary for many who do not drive and live,
but work, or have friends, in other parts of the shire there are three
private bus companies, but due to their lack of co-ordination and drive for
profits they have structured jurisdictions that require a person that may
live in Ocean Shores but then works in Byron to catch two buses, opposed to
one, paying up to $10 for a jouney that can take an hour, which in a car
would only take 10 mins and cost less in petrol. Furthermore, they operate
less on weekends and have strict hours such as not past a certain hour 6 (?)
each day.
My suggestion is a diversity of options, including an easily accessible car
pooling type option (for day to day travel) with times that consistent
drivers leave that is accessible, i.e on the internet, accountable and well
advertised in local papers. In this scenario people would volunteer their
car, maybe have to get something like a blue card to be allowed-but that
could get funding and be seen by such drivers to service other employment
opportunities...youth would pay a set price dependant on mileage that is
competitive with city bus prices-$1 5k's-or something- because drivers are
going anyway, and it should act as a community developer. Could be
advertised as getting the community behind the youth and connecting people.
It's not really a new idea, but it could be effective in creating community
trust and getting young people where they need to be at an affordable price.
Plus some drivers would love the company.
Angela Rowland. Hope that may be somewhat helpful? Sorry about the rave,
thought about it a bit, feeling stuck alot in my earlier days by a lack of
transport options.
