Date:Friday, December 1, 2006  11:49:40 (+1100)
From:KALPAGE, Karen <kkalpage @............au>

Hello,

We are calling for young people under 25 to assist us in evaluating a program called Talk Out Loud that addresses both mental health and drug and alcohol issues. The trial (15 or 16 December) will enable Red Cross and Beyond Blue to deliver a stronger service.

Thanks,

Karen

Helping Young People Help Each Other – An Exciting New Trial

Sydneysiders, we need your help! Recently Australian Red Cross, save-a-mate entered into a national partnership with Beyond Blue to implement an exciting education initiative, “Talk Out Loud”, that addresses both mental health and drug and alcohol issues in young people.

The project aims to raise awareness and knowledge of mental health issues, decrease stigma and promote ways for young people to maintain good mental health and wellbeing, and build strong peer support networks for young people.  The program also increases knowledge about the links between mental health and drug and alcohol use, as well as the importance of encouraging young people to access help when problems arise.

‘Talk Out Loud’ is initially being piloted in New South Wales and South Australia and will be evaluated with the Hunter Institute for Mental Health to ascertain its efficacy and reach.

We are currently offering a series of FREE courses to the public to assist us in evaluating the program during this limited trial period.  Participants need to be under the age of 25 and able to attend training on either the 15th or the 16th of December in Sydney.

Talk Out Loud has been designed to be delivered to small groups of people, a maximum of 25 participants in each course, in one day (taking into account scheduled breaks), for approximately 6 hours.

The Australian Red Cross Talk Out Loud Program is an interactive, flexible, educational program that focuses on equipping young people with the knowledge and skills they need to support their peers.

Recent research has highlighted that 9 out of the 10 major health burdens impacting young men are either drug and alcohol or mental health related, for young women the figure is 8 out of 10.  We also know that young people are most likely to turn to each other for support and information first, before any other group.  The Talk Out Loud initiative provides a vital strategy to address these issues.

If you would like more information about the Australian Red Cross Talk Out Loud pilot program or would like to book a course for your school/ organisation, please call 9229 4247 or email Courtney on cpayne@redcross.org.au

Media enquiries to Karen Kalpage – 9229 4226 / 0408 632 582.

Thanks,

Karen
