Hi Greg,
In the area of developmental assets (thriving indicators) SEARCH
Institute (Minneapolis) believe that having adult role models is one
the 40 indicators for healthy young people. see
www.search-institute.org.
Quote from their research " Much of the literature on the impact of
role models on adolescent behaviour pertains to the impact of adults
who model negative behaviours (eg substance use, aggressive behaviour)
Fewer studeies pertain to the positive impact of adult rolemodels (eg
Brewster 1994, Brewster et al 1993) Still adults who model positive
behaviours are directly or indirectly associated with:
- higher levels of self-esteem and self efficacy (Whitbeck 1987)
- decreased problem behaviour (Brewster 1994)
- decreased early sexual intercourse among females (East 1996)
- reduced smoking (Botvin, Botvin, Baker, Dusenbury and Goldberg 1992)
- reduced alcohol use (Chassin and Barrera 1993, Hops et al 1990)
- reduced use of marijuana and hard drugs (Hops et al 1990)
- reduced impulsively and aggressive behaviour (Fry 1988, martin et al
1994)
- Improved schoolmand school completion (Danziger and Farber 1990
- positive school adjustment ( Ryan et al 1994)
- improved vocational expectations (Cook et al 1996)
- higher achievement (Achor and Morales 1990)
Hope this helps
