The dawning of
the New Year means that Thinking
Drinking
II: From Problems to Solutions (26 – 28
February 2007, Melbourne,
Australia) is just around
the corner.
Thinking
Drinking
II: From Problems to Solutions, organised by
the Australian Drug Foundation
and the Community Alcohol Action Network, is a major conference for
professionals interested in alcohol issues from a variety of fields including
health and welfare, policy, research, law enforcement, local government,
community development and education.
The program
includes a diverse range of speakers. To highlight just a
few:
§
Associate
Professor Christopher
Doran of the
University of
Queensland will present a situational
analysis of adolescent drinking in
Australia
and review a
range of strategies that have been adopted to curb adolescent drinking
problems.
§
Mr
Peter Gordon of the law firm
Slater and Gordon will examine the potential for drinkers who are damaged by
consuming alcohol to take legal action against alcohol manufacturers to
compensate for the harm.
§
On his first
visit to Australia, Dr Tim
McCreanor from Massey
University in
New
Zealand will report on
how the promotion of alcohol to young people influences
the construction of youth identity.
§
Dr
Tanya
Chikritzhs of the National
Drug Research Institute will review the evidence for the alleged
protective effects of alcohol and Professor
Dallas English of the University of Melbourne/Cancer Council Victoria
will report on the impact of alcohol in the development of
cancers.
Other issues to
be addressed include social marketing, dual diagnosis, local government
strategies, Indigenous issues, liquor licensing, taxation, role of parents and
schools and policy
development.
