The Mental Health
Association is inviting interested persons the chance to increase their
knowledge and understanding of Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Bipolar Disorder
and Schizophrenia. The seminars will be held during the 7-9 February 2007, at no cost to the participant, at George St, Sydney CBD (8
minute walk from Central train station). Additional information on each of the
seminars is outlined below.
Introduction to Bipolar Disorder
This one day course offers education regarding the symptoms
and definitions of Bipolar Disorder, including the distinction between Bipolar
I and II. The course will cover the characteristics of both manic and
depressive episodes, medications available and explores how to make informed choices
in regard to treatment. The course also explores the planning for and recovery
from episodes and making the most of relationships with health professionals.
Depression
This half day course looks at signs and symptoms of
Depression and what definitions are used by health professionals in making a
diagnosis. The course includes providing a basic background to causes of
depression including biological and simple, practical self-management
techniques which aim to minimise the impact of depression on people’s
lives. The course also informs people with Depression potential treatment
options.
Anxiety Disorders
This half day course covers a number of Anxiety disorders,
including Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Panic Disorder and Posttraumatic
Stress Disorder. The course will focus on psychoeducation, such as the
‘Fight/Flight Response’ and simple self-management techniques. The
course helps to provide understanding of how coping mechanisms such as
avoidance and repression develop and the potential ongoing effect that they
have on behaviour. The course will also inform participants of treatment
options including cognitive behaviour therapy, psychotherapy and medication.
Understanding Schizophrenia
This one day course provides education around the
definitions used by health professionals to diagnose Schizophrenia along with
providing information regarding the symptoms associated with the illness. The
course aims to minimise the use of labelling and to explore common myths about
Schizophrenia. In more detail, the different stages of Schizophrenia will be
examined as will treatments and medications used, exploring how to make
informed choices during treatment. The seminar will also explore the planning
for and recovery from episodes and making the most of relationships with health
professionals.
