Wanting to throw into the mix that Danah ( http://www.danah.org/ ),
who is in Melbourne soon to talk about Myspace, Young People,
Education and Networking ( http://www.educationau.edu.au/jahia/Jahia/
pid/479 ) has recently linked on her blog that to a couple of
interesting articles on "sexual predators / sexual offenders" on
sites like Myspace.
Both articles have been written by Stephanie Booth on her blog and
were interesting reads...
Article 1: MySpace Banning Sex Offenders: Online Predator Paranoia
Link: http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2007/07/25/myspace-banning-
sex-offenders-online-predator-paranoia/
Article 2: Parents, Teenagers, Internet, Predators, Fear…
Link 2: http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2007/07/25/parents-
teenagers-internet-predators-fear/
Both are very interesting reads that might speak to the article on
the Age, especially when the words "Sexual Offenders" are used in an
american article, Stephanie writes in the above articles that the
sexual offenders registry in the US also includes people who may not
have necessarily been involved in sexual predatory or pedophilia...
that the definition of sexual offender on the registry is much wider
than we might be aware.
The first article asks what we mean by the term "Sexual Offender" and
how predators might act online
The second reflects on some advice for parents who have been
concerned post the recent media interest in sexual predators online
in Myspace/Facebook (and even on the TV show Criminal Minds on Monday)
