Hi Rachael
At Young Achievement Australia we run
programs for a group of 12-25 young people to set up and run their own self
directed business and produce a product or service that can be one of the
following (or all) - innovative, unique, environmentally friendly, technology
based or community based.
To set up their business they sell shares
to the public and the aim if the program is to challenge them to produce a
product that meets a need, while operating in an ethical, sustainable and
socially responsible manner and making enough profit to pay shareholders a
dividend and make a donation to a Registered Charity. For 2 hours a week for 24
weeks the group work through all the processes and tasks required to operate
their business and are mentored by volunteer business and industry mentors.
The program builds their teamwork,
leadership and employability skills and the program culminates with awards
events in each state and the national awards. The program also gives young
people an idea about how businesses can operate for both financial and social
profit and how to balance this - and also which real businesses actually do
this – and which business they would want to work for.
We offer the program to all young people
free of charge and it’s open to anyone aged over 14. Young to us means
young at heart so there is no upper age limit. We rely on businesses and
government to pay the sponsorship fee of $5500 incl GST per program which works
out at about $250-$400 per person (depending on the number of people
involved).
Our programs have also been extended to
meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and we have
partnered with Indigenous Business Australia to provide these programs. These
programs are delivered by facilitators who are employed by us and who are
either of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent or who have a proven and
demonstrated ability both culturally and professionally to work with these communities.
Achievement to us means that we try to
help our participants achieve their potential and participants are not
necessarily high achievers – but all those young people that want to have
a go at doing something or finding out what they are good at. We have
successfully run programs for youth at risk and in correctional centres.
Programs operate in all metro, regional
and rural areas – wherever there is a need, a group of participants and
suitable mentors

Subject: [youthgas] Youth leadership
programs
Hello
all,
I'm
wondering if anyone knows of any youth leadership programs that are out there
at the moment - we have just set up a Mayor's Youth Advisory Council and we are
looking at training opportunities for them. The programs do not need to be
Tasmanian based, any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Rachael.
