Youth
workers know that sometimes the challenges facing young
people are too big for a single young person, or even a small group
of young people and workers to overcome on their own. Searching
endlessly for accommodation that doesn't exist or getting no support
to re-engage with education are just two examples. When the
challenges are too big, youth workers need to work together with
those in the community and across the State to raise awareness and
find solutions.
This is where Peak Bodies like the Youth Affairs Network of
Queensland (YANQ) can
help...
At YANQ our job is
to raise awareness about the systemic challenges young people face
and to bring people together to develop and share solutions to the big
issues.
So if you've got issues, we want to hear about them! And we've set
up a system to make it as easy as possible - the Youth Consultative
Network or YCN for short. If you raise issues with YANQ, we do take
notice and we do make sure (at the very least) that relevant
government bodies are informed. But we need your help to determine
what the issues are and what the best solutions might be.
Here's how you can help us to tackle the big issues.
- Get along to your local interagency/network.
-
You might be able to find your local network listed at www.yanq.org.au/networks.
-
If your local interagency isn't listed here please tell us
so we can add it to our list - e-mail ycn@yanq.org.au
-
If there is no youth interagency in your area, there may be
a generic human services interagency. O you might want to start a new
network
yourself. If you need some help starting an interagency, e-mail ndo@yanq.org.au
for some resources.
-
Have a discussion with your colleagues in
your network and come up with a list of 3 (high priority) issues facing
young people, and 3 issues facing local services. If your group needs
some help narrowing down the issues you might find some of these
resources
(www.yanq.org.au/content/view/684/59/) helpful.
-
Tell YANQ the outcomes of of your
discussions. Your
interagency/network can do this (up to twice per year) by filling out
the form at www.yanq.org.au/ycnform.
You can also use this form to share news about exciting new projects
happening in your area (we can all benefit from some new ideas) as well
as any particular training needs your area has. YANQ will then make
sure that decision makers are made aware of the issues being raised. We
will also use the information to inform our planning and policy
development processes as well as providing a brief response to some of
the issues raised.
Talking about the
challenges young people face is great. But
we need to take them to the next level - tell your Peak Body!
That's what the YCN is for. Through the YCN we can bring together
more people, more organisations, more networks and together start to
address some of inequities and injustices facing young people today.
