Dear YouthGAS,
The power of a story is sometimes underestimated. A story has the capability to take a person on a journey, outlining the challenges, the highs and the lows, and the end result.
Introducing....
The Hopes and Issue Forum - February 1, 2008 - The Venue, Salamanca Place, Hobart
The Hopes and Issues Forum will capture the hopes, dreams, concerns and achievements of young people in Tasmania today. The Forum will bring together young people who have a story to share.
The aim of the forum is to capture the typical stories of young people in Tasmanian society today by:
· Placing a spotlight on the real issues being faced by young Tasmanians;
· Empowering those who are generally disengaged from traditional forms of youth participation;
· Provide an opportunity for young people who have never been involved in any form of community development to meet and share their stories with key community leaders;
· Provide a launch pad for more Tasmanian young people to become involved and active in their community.
What Makes The Hopes and Issues Forum Different From Other Forums?
The Hopes and Issues Forum is run by young people for young people and welcomes the involvement of all young Tasmanians aged 16 to 25 years.
We will be searching for the stories and the personalities of young people that do not normally get heard.
We want the stories of young Tasmanians striving for their dreams; the stories of the local young person who has overcome struggles and difficulties.
Community leaders from many fields - community, politics, cultural - will be invited to attend the Forum. Initially the community leaders will have a listening role, but at the end of the Forum they will be invited to share their personal thoughts on what they have heard. Through this intergenerational information sharing The Hopes and Issues Forum seeks to provide our community leaders with the opportunity to hear how their actions affect young people, and to hear the worries, dreams, fears and triumphs of young people living in Tasmania in 2008. It is also an opportunity for young people to network and create potential mentoring opportunities.
Themes
The theme of the Forum is 'How do we keep the ship afloat'.
How do we, as young people, keep ourselves afloat, what keeps us moving, and what contributes to us sinking?
The Forum will specifically ask: ·What do we do well? ·What could we do better? ·What we'd like or need to see?
How Do I submit My Story?
2.Through the post to: The Foundation for Young Australians, PO Box 239, Melbourne 3001
3.The Hopes and Issues Team members will be digitally recording stories at popular youth public spaces and local youth services, depending on demand... stay tuned for details! (
