Hi Annie
I would be interested in the comments of members on what special
considerations (if any) they have adopted for those on their
committees who are aged 12 and 13? Has anyone ever involved a person
younger than 12?

Hi Melinda, The Project I coordinate is YPA funded
(Youth Participation & Access) and since it's inception I have been working
in partnership with a group of 15 young people who have had decision making
responsibility, ultimately they have guided and shaped the outcomes of the
Project. For them they have developed a whole range of "Team" skills and have
been involved in Civic Engagement and Advocacy activities for almost 18
months, not to mention the tangible outcomes of the Project which have been of
great benefit to the broader Youth population in our Shire. This
"Youth Action Committee" has worked, I believe, for a few different
reasons... 1. the young people involved shared a common vision and
purpose 2. they had the power to really contribute, drive and shape the
project at every point 3. they were "upskilled" along the way and continue to
be offered other opportunities to enhance their skills base and connect with
other services and agencies to do so 4. they skills they have learnt have
been transferrable to other areas of their lives 5. they and their
contributions have been valued, celebrated and rewarded along
the way 6. their role has been very "task" focussed - they have
been able to work together on different projects within the Project
and this has kept their interest and enthusiasm I have
seen other "Advisory" models fall over or fall short because expectations, roles
and purpose have been ambiguous or they have been locked into a consultative
role only. I think young people appreciate the opportunity to "do" at the same
time they are making sure their voices are heard. Hope this
is helpful. Annie Rowland OurS Project Worker Macedon Ranges

Hello Youth
Gases!
Does anyone out there
run a Youth Committee - but not along the same model as a Youth Advisory
Council?
Do you have a YAC and
a Youth Committee or do you have one and not the other?
If you could send me
through some information in regards to which models you use and the ones
that have worked and haven't work, or which model you prefer to use that
would be fabulous!
Cheers
Mel
