Subject:[youthgas] Free hep C education to young people - WA
Date:Monday, January 7, 2008  11:09:02 (+0900)
From:Fleur Chapman <eto @...............au>

Dear WA youth workers,

With 2008 now in full swing, I would like to offer you the opportunity to book this years hepatitis education sessions in advance.

As a free service to young people accessing services such as yours, HCWA provides tailored education sessions (with a duration of usually one hour) addressing issues around hepatitis C prevention and harm reduction, as well as “living with” and treatment options.

There are currently 20,000 people in Western Australia living with hepatitis C, with approximately 1000 new diagnosis every year. Young people aged 15-19 years of age account for around 10% of these diagnoses.

With over 90% of new infections occurring through unsafe injecting drug use practices, education on harm reduction is the most effective way of reducing the overall incidences of this potentially devastating virus. Anecdotal evidence of shared equipment use in self-tattooing, self-piercing and self-harm is another worrying practice we wish to address. No vaccine is currently available for hepatitis C, making prevention education the only sure way to stop this epidemic.

Education sessions can be held on your premises and are tailored to the individual needs of the group (including age groups). Ongoing appointments can be arranged – all free of charge.

For further information, or to book a session, please phone me on (08) 9227 9806 or email eto@hepatitiswa.com.au

Thank you, I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Kind regards,

Fleur
