Hi all,
The Children's Court Assistance Scheme (CCAS) exists to provide support to young
people appearing on criminal charges at Children's Courts in NSW. It consists of
a roster of trained youth workers who can guide the young person through the
court processes and provide emotional support through what can be a very
traumatic experience. The youth worker will also aim to engage the young person
to discover the underlying issues related to the offending behaviour and can then
refer the young person to appropriate community and welfare services
like drug and alcohol counselling, crisis accommodation etc. In this way, the
support worker increases the overall effectiveness of the juvenile justice system
in preventing reoffending and rehabilitating the young offender.
Most of the volunteers currently on our rosters have the support of their
organisations and attend court as part of their paid employment. New volunteers
will receive free training in legal and court processes and penalties, as well as
how to be the most effective court support worker. This training will be run on
the 27th of March 2008.
We are urgently need new volunteers to staff the Scheme's at Bidura
Children's Court (Glebe) and the Children's Court complex in Parramatta in
April. For more information or if you think you would like to be involved in this
valuable service and attend the free training, do not hesitate to contact me on
9760 0381 or on Timothy_Khoo@clc.net.au.
Kind regards,
Tim
