Engaging young people - Early School Leavers/ Unemployed

Hi All,
My name is Christine Jeyachandran and I am coordinating a project in Woolloomooloo (Sydney) called "Work at the Loo". The project focuses on youth (14-19 year olds) who have already left or dropped out of school. It aims to encourage and direct them into training, employment or even back to school.

In short, the Work at the 'Loo* project helps young people:

-       figure out what you want to do,
-     identify what you need to do to get there,
-     prepare for applications and interviews,
-     identify traineeships/apprenticeships, and jobs
-     arrange work experience placements, and
-     to be involved in training sessions.

The project is based within a Housing Department community where very few of the young people complete their year 10 School Certificate. Youth are highly unmotivated, often not working and difficult to engage in activities.

If you know of any similar programs or have ideas or resoruces useful for engaging such youth please forward them on to me. I would love to learn from others.

cheers

Yours Sincerely
Christine Jeyachandran
